Our ability to solve complex problems often require the integration of knowledge from multiple disciplines and the establishment of teams that involve individuals from the private and public sectors. In support of these environments, XSEDE provides critical services that support the use of high-performance computing, the storage and access of data, and the ability to operate as virtual organizations. To complement these services and enhance the effectiveness of novice researchers and others in such settings, professional development in the areas of knowledge integration, team building, and inclusion of perspectives is imperative. A recent National Research Council report noted that “team science can lead to results with greater scientific impact, innovation, productivity, and reach than single-investigator approaches.” This talk introduces the NSF CREST-funded CyberShARE Center of Excellence and its efforts on building diverse, interdisciplinary teams. In particular, the talk will describe the basis and practice of team work, present models of interdisciplinary team work, and discuss the community’s role in supporting diversity.
