iRODS is open source data management software, providing a virtualization layer that spans storage devices, a metadata catalog, a rule engine that can be programmed to execute any action upon any trigger, and federated access between independently managed deployments. It has been used at the multi-petabyte scale to implement sophisticated preservation and access control policies, with auditing; extract metadata from files to make the metadata searchable; track data processing steps from raw inputs to finished products; and unify data management and access across local and cloud-based file systems and object stores.
This tutorial will be a hands-on workshop where attendees will learn how to: use iRODS administrative commands, set up automatic replication between a local file system and a cloud-based object storage system, use an iRODS rule to automate file format transformation, explore the iRODS metadata catalog, and transfer data to and from iRODS.
