Procter and Gamble uses modeling and simulation to develop consumer products. High performance computing has been a critically enabling factor. The engagement in the area of formulation and materials science is a rapidly maturing area of engagement.
Development of new consumer products includes new technologies with improved cleaning performance, better sustainability through using less materials, and a delighting experience during use. Molecular simulations of multi-component and surfactant mixtures have become an important tool for designing consumer products. Studying interactions at the levels of molecules provides a virtual microscope operating at the length scale of molecules (billionths of meters) to understand how new ingredients or formula compositions change the property and performance of consumer products.
This presentation will give examples from the XSEDE industrial challenge program and other examples of how molecular simulations can be used to research the physics behind common consumer products.
