GeoHashViz: Interactive Analytics for Mapping Spatiotemporal Diffusion of Twitter Hashtags

Twitter serves as multi-purpose social media which attracts hundreds of millions of users to share their daily activity logs. With ever-increasing use of GPS-enabled devices, these activities can be linked to the approximate location of the user, hence providing a rich nearly real-time geospatial dataset. Recent studies have suggested that the Twitter hashtags can be used as a medium to study idea diffusion, due to their popularity and concise structure. However, to our knowledge, there is no available interactive framework which can provide in-depth analytics on spatiotemporal diffusion of hashtags. Our framework, GeoHashViz, provides an scalable approach to extract metrics related to geospatial diffusion of hashtags, and visualize them to the user in a highly interactive web-based application. We take advantage of Hadoop to calculate the aggregated metrics related to both hashtags and locations for incoming tweets. To increase the usability of the framework, GeoHashViz has been integrated into CyberGIS Gateway, a leading online cyberGIS environment for a large number of users to perform computing- and data-intensive, and collaborative geospatial problem-solving enabled by advanced cyberinfrastructure.
