Cloud computing has moved beyond computer science projects and into production research computing environments. Cloud is now a major technology in enterprise use in industry, in academia as well as in the national cyberinfrastructure (CI). Multiple XSEDE service providers (SP) have awards that include cloud or cloud like technologies at their sites. These new deployments are unlike any current XSEDE offerings and thus may require new and coordinated XSEDE services and capabilities to be offered in the future. In order to better serve the community we will want to spur discussion at this BOF to identify any common needs related to cloud computing for XSEDE in operations, security, and researchers usability. One such example would be the discussion of a XSEDE cloud image repository and how it may be beneficial to all XSEDE participants and stakeholders. Other topics could include security implications, image vetting, federation, scheduling, software defined networking (SDN), and participant cloud experiences.
This BOF aims to provide a forum for recent NSF awardees with cloud capabilities to describe their environments and to discuss and identify topics for future deeper dives that would serve the XSEDE community regarding future services.
